It's 2008. I'm 14 years old. I decide to sit down and write what will become my first honest to goodness short film. It's called ZERO G. It's 16 pages. I read it back to myself. I throw it out.
Now it's 2010. I'm 15. I try again. Still pretty bad, but here we are...

This is essentially the second draft of my first official short film. It's terrible, but I want to have it up here not only as a mark of where I started. But also as a look at what the movie could have been. Some things are better, some things are way worse. There never really was a "third draft" to this movie. I more or less realized as we were shooting that actors weren't showing up, plans were falling through and I over all needed to change things. I actually wrote up new pages the night before shooting some times.

Some notable differences:
  • Logan has more screen time.
  • Rex is an asshole.
  • Rex has a girlfriend named Vicky. She was cut from the movie when the actor dropped out.
  • The electrician character (nicknamed "Voltage" in the script) is not divorced and is actually in a great relationship. This was changed for time.
  • There is a scene that involves an ambulance. The only reason we did not get access to one is because the characters "take the lord's name in vein".
    I'm not joking. That happened.
  • There is an extended third act that includes a showdown between Rex and Voltage. We mostly shot the whole thing for the original cut.
  • After credits scene to lead into the sequel that never happened.

Carrier Pigeon

After a young man takes a paper route, he is forced to fight for the position against a ruthless gang of teenage cyclists.

This is a short film that never happened. CARRIER PIGEON (aka PAPER BOY NEEDED) was an idea that Jamie Zin presented to me several years ago. Long enough to the point that I don't remember when exactly it was. I was initially just brought on to assist in developing the story so that Jamie could write the screenplay.
I believe Jamie wrote the first two scenes before calling it quits and giving me the reigns. I wrote the rest of it and I think Jamie made a couple more changes since then.
The draft I'm posting was still a work-in-progress, so there are probably a few messy spots.
Last year, I was told that Jamie wanted to re-develop it from the ground up. So there may be a different version of this some day. We'll see. Regardless, I want this version to exist in some form.

The whole  short is meant to have a tongue-in-cheek tone and sort of be a parody of campy 80's/90's kid's movies. I had plans to write Top Gun style songs for it to amp up the cheese factor. Never got to do that part, unfortunately. Just play "Danger Zone" in your head while you read it.

MARRIAGE was originally planned as a social commentary sketch about gay marriage. There was going to be a gay and a straight couple, both relationships would be exactly the same. They both fall in love, they get married, they resent each other and then one axe murders the other. There's no difference.
That some how transformed itself into a weird, surrealist dark comedy short film. I wrote this with the intention of alienating the audience. I wanted the characters to sound like they were written by aliens who don't understand what humans are like.
The milk scene in this script is WAY better than it turned out in the film. Enjoy!

MONSTERS IN THE CLOSET

Written days before shooting in November of 2011, MONSTERS IN THE CLOSET would be considered more of a sketch than a short film today. But it was definitely a bigger achievement at the time. In all honesty, this one is better on paper. We weren't really ready to do it as an actual film. The only major difference here is a weird gag where one of the monsters throws a severed foot at the kid. But that's about it.
